Hookah Bowl Types Explained: Turkish, Killer, Phunnel & Vortex

Hookah bowl types explained: Turkish, killer, phunnel and thermic bowls on a dark table

The bowl is the cheapest part of a hookah and the part that changes the session the most. The same tobacco can taste muted in one bowl and sharp in another, and the difference comes down to the shape: how many holes it has, where they sit, and how thick the clay is. Here is how the main bowl types work, what each one is best for, and which ones we carry.

Type Holes Best for Trade-off
Turkish Several holes in the bottom Most tobaccos, beginners Easier to overheat, some juice drains into the stem
Killer 5 to 7 holes, thick flat base Dense dark leaf, maximum strength Needs real heat to open up
Phunnel One central hole in a raised spire Wet, juicy blends, long sessions Gentler draw, harder to push to high strength
Thermic (bowl + HMD) Glass bowl inside a double-walled heating system Even heat with no coal fiddling Costs more than a clay bowl
Vortex 3 to 4 small holes in the side of the spire Older ceramic bowls More restricted airflow than a phunnel

Turkish bowls — the classic

A Turkish bowl is wide and fairly deep, with a handful of holes in the bottom. It heats up quickly, gives dense smoke, and works with almost any tobacco, which makes it the most forgiving bowl while you learn heat management. The catch is that it is easier to overheat the tobacco, and part of the juice can run down through the holes into the stem.

Cosmo Turkish Classic hookah bowl with several holes in the base

Examples: the Turkish-shape bowls in the Cosmo collection (glazed red clay, roughly 18-25 g per pack) and the Darkside Classic (glazed clay, about 18-20 g).

Killer bowls — built for heat and strength

A killer bowl has thick walls and a thick, flat base with five or seven holes. That mass takes heavy heat without scorching the tobacco, so it is the bowl for dense dark-leaf packs and for smokers who want maximum strength. It is not a bowl for delicate blends or light heat.

Darkside Killer hookah bowl with five holes in the base

Examples: the Darkside Killer, which runs hotter than the Classic and hits harder on flavor and nicotine, and the killer-style bowls in the Cosmo collection.

Phunnel bowls — for juicy dark leaf

A phunnel has one hole in the middle of a raised spire instead of holes in the bottom. The juice stays in the bowl instead of draining into the stem, and the draw is easy because air does not have to pass through the packed tobacco. That is why phunnels are the usual choice for wet, dark-leaf blends such as Tangiers, where losing the juice kills the flavor. The trade-off: it is harder to get very high strength out of a phunnel than out of a killer.

Oblako Phunnel hookah bowl in terracotta with a white glazed interior

Examples: the Oblako Phunnel Mono (also in green), the Darkside Phunnel (78 mm tall, 12 mm chamber), the Tangiers Medium Phunnel, the Hookah John Alien 2022, the Alpaca Rook and the heavy Bastard Phunnel. If you smoke Tangiers, see our guide to the Tangiers lines and the Tangiers bowls.

There is also a metal option: the Frigate Ogonek is an aluminum funnel bowl with a finned body that carries excess heat away from the pack.

Thermic bowls — a bowl and an HMD in one

A thermic bowl is less a shape than a system. Instead of a clay bowl topped with foil or a separate heat management device, the bowl and the heating system are one piece: a glass bowl sits inside a double-walled housing that spreads the heat evenly, so the tobacco heats without scorching and you do not have to move coals during the session. Ash and falling coals stay out of the tobacco.

Quasar RAAS 2 hookah bowl with HMD – White

The one we carry is the Quasar RAAS 2 from the French brand Quasar, which made the first thermic bowl for hookah: borosilicate glass, an aluminum heating system and a silicone stem, 18-25 g capacity, built for 26-27 mm cube charcoal. It comes in Black (smoked glass) and White (clear glass), and both are in the RAAS bowls collection. For other ways to control heat, see our heat management devices.

Vortex bowls — an older name

You will still see "vortex" in older hookah guides. It describes older ceramic bowls with a raised spire like a phunnel, but with three or four small holes in the side of the spire instead of one large opening at the top. It is more of a brand-style name than a bowl type.

Which bowl should you choose?

  • New to hookah, or you want one bowl for everything: Turkish.
  • You smoke dense dark leaf and want it strong: killer.
  • You smoke wet, juicy dark leaf and want long, even sessions: phunnel.
  • You want even heat without managing coals: a thermic bowl like the Quasar RAAS 2.

Whatever shape you pick, pair it with the right heat: foil or a heat management device, and good hookah charcoal.
