Hookah Coals Guide: Sizes, Brands & How to Light Them

Hookah coals guide: glowing coconut charcoal cubes falling into a heat management device on a hookah bowl

Coals decide how a hookah tastes as much as the tobacco does. Too little heat and the bowl is thin and weak, too much and it turns harsh in ten minutes. Most of that comes down to three choices: natural coconut or quick-light, which size, and how many coals you put on the bowl. Here is how each one works and which coals we carry for every setup.

Natural coconut vs quick-light coals

Natural coconut coals are pressed from coconut shells with no chemical coating. They need a coal burner, a gas stove or a torch and take around 8 to 12 minutes to light, but they have no smell or taste of their own, give steady heat and burn about 60 to 90 minutes. This is what lounges and most regular smokers use.

Quick-light coals are coated with an accelerant so they catch from a lighter in seconds. The accelerant has to burn off completely before the coal goes on the bowl, otherwise it gets into the smoke, and the coal itself lasts roughly half as long. They are fine for a picnic, but for flavor natural coconut wins every time.

Coal sizes compared: flats, 22mm, 25mm, 26mm and 27mm

Size changes how much heat each piece gives, how long it lasts and what it fits. This is how the formats compare today:

Size Format Best for Our coals
Flats Older format Home smokers, foil setups, people who like the classic way Titanium Flats, Titanium Flats Small Pack
22mm cubes Older format Small bowls, lighter heat at home Superior 22mm
25mm cubes The standard Almost any bowl, on foil or an HMD Titanium 25mm, King of Fire 25mm, Superior Coco 25mm
26mm cubes New lounge format Kaloud Lotus and similar HMDs Amy Deluxe 26mm, LeOrange 26mm
27mm cubes New lounge format, large Heating a full bowl of dark leaf on three coals Titanium Mega Cubes 27mm

Flats and 22mm: the older format

Flats and small 22mm cubes were the norm for years. They are lighter on the foil, heat up a little faster and are easy to adjust one piece at a time. Lounges have mostly moved on to bigger cubes, but for home smokers and fans of the classic foil setup they still do the job well.

25mm: the standard

The 25mm cube is the size most bowls and heat management devices are built around. If you are not sure what to buy, start here: it works on foil, on most HMDs and in Turkish, killer and phunnel bowls alike.

Also popular in this size, and known for their quality, are Cocoloco 25mm coals. Cocoloco has made hookah charcoal since 2016 at its own coconut-shell plant in Indonesia, so every box is consistent: dense, evenly pressed cubes, 72 in a 1 kg pack, no chemical additives or smell, very little ash and steady heat that holds through a long session.

26mm and 27mm: the format that took over the lounges

Bigger cubes hold more heat and last longer, which is why lounges switched to them. 26mm is the ideal size for the Kaloud Lotus: every coal shrinks a little while it lights, and a 26mm cube still fills the Lotus slots properly by the time it is fully lit, instead of rattling around like a smaller cube. 27mm cubes are on the large side for many devices, but they let you heat a full bowl on just three coals, which is exactly what dense dark leaf needs.

Our pick for the 26mm format: Amy Deluxe

Amy Deluxe 26mm is a natural coconut-shell coal made in Indonesia: true 26 × 26 × 26 mm cubes, about 64 pieces in a 1 kg box, no smell or taste during lighting and very little ash. It is the size that fits the Kaloud Lotus and other lounge HMDs, and the even burn makes it easy to hold the same heat for the whole session. See the full Amy Deluxe coal collection.

Another 26mm option is LeOrange 26mm: a coconut coal without additives or fillers, rated for about an hour per cube and up to 90 minutes inside an HMD.

How long to light hookah coals

  1. Put the coals on an electric coal burner such as the Fumari charcoal burner, or on a gas stove with a coal screen.
  2. Heat for 4 to 5 minutes, then flip them with tongs.
  3. Heat another 3 to 5 minutes until every side glows red with a thin layer of gray ash. Larger 26-27mm cubes need longer, up to 12-15 minutes in total.
  4. Check for black spots. A coal that is still black in places is not ready and will make the smoke harsh.

Always light coals in a ventilated space, and never on a burner left unattended.

How many coals to use

  • Turkish or phunnel bowl with foil: three 25mm cubes or three to four flats.
  • Kaloud Lotus or another HMD: two to three 26mm cubes. Start with two and add the third once the bowl warms up.
  • Dense dark leaf in a large bowl: three 27mm cubes to heat the whole pack.
  • Thermic bowls like the Quasar RAAS are built for 26-27mm cubes.

This is a starting point, not a rule. If the smoke gets harsh, take a coal off or move them to the edge; if it is thin, add heat. Knock the ash off every 20 to 30 minutes so the coals keep breathing.

Bowls made for the Lotus: the Alpaca x Kaloud bowls. Other ways to control heat: heat management devices. For the bowl side of the setup, see our guide to hookah bowl types.

Common coal mistakes

  • Putting coals on too early. Half-lit coals taste bitter and burn out fast.
  • Too much heat at the start. Begin with fewer coals and add heat as the bowl warms up.
  • Never ashing the coals. A thick layer of ash insulates the coal and the heat drops.
  • Wrong size for the device. Small cubes in a large HMD leave gaps and heat unevenly.

FAQ

How long does a hookah coal last?

A natural coconut cube burns about 60 minutes, and up to 90 minutes inside a heat management device. Quick-light coals last roughly half as long.

Can I light coconut coals with a lighter?

No. Natural coconut coals have no accelerant, so they need a coal burner, a gas stove or a torch.

What size coals do I need for a Kaloud Lotus?

26mm cubes, such as Amy Deluxe 26mm. They still fit the Lotus properly once they are fully lit.

Are flats or cubes better?

Cubes hold more heat per piece and last longer, so they are the choice for lounges and HMDs. Flats are lighter on foil and suit home smokers who use the classic setup.
